Proper Business Etiquette for College Graduates and Beyond
Many of us fail to forget our first job out of college. Why? That’s when much of the learning takes place. My first post college position included Assistant Media Buyer, which meant lots of negotiating plus free lunch. Not sure how much has changed, but it was during those 2-3 hour lunch breaks that I learned my most valuable lessons in business dining etiquette.
A business lunch can take many forms. It can be an interview, a prospective client, a general business lunch or networking opportunity. Either way, follow these simple tips and you can’t go wrong.
1. Stay Clear of Office Gossip and Offensive Jokes
Have a general discussion on how things are going in the office. What are some recent job developments? What are the latest industry trends? Is there potential growth on the horizon? You can still laugh and enjoy yourself. Do this without letting out corporate secrets, the latest gossip or offending other parties.
2. Preparation is Key
Prepare a meeting agenda and stay focused. Normally the host prepares the agenda. However, guests should have their own “need to know” list on hand. Know something about the company and the person with whom you are dining. Remember to carry business cards and brochures.
3. Confirm
Typically, the host should confirm. If two days before the guest has not received a confirmation, they should follow up with a confirmation of the location, date and time. The host not only confirms but also arrives early and leaves word with the maître d’ that they will be responsible for the bill.
Allow Eye Contact
Guests should take the seat facing the wall so the host can get the attention of the server easily with eye contact. As for seating, look at the image below for ideas, which allow comfortable eye contact between the host(s) and their guest(s):
4. Avoid Alcohol
A sparkling water with a twist of lime is safe. You can also try virgin mixed drinks. A no-alcohol policy still applies to a business luncheon. At a business lunch, you are the face of your company. As an individual, you are your brand.
Last but not least …
5. Turn Your Cell Phone OFF!
Either turn it off or place it on silent mode. Silent mode is fine if you are expecting an important call. If your phone vibrates in silent mode, kindly excuse yourself and keep it brief.
A business lunch is such a great networking opportunity. Aside from my nervousness during my first few, I now consider myself a pro. Just remember the above tips and do your research. Try not to worry too much about the right fork, spoon or glass. Ask if you are unsure!
