A Suit Won’t Solve It
It’s the beginning.
Over the summer, I had a chance to train college students on leadership. Not only was the experience extremely rewarding but also it was an eye-opener. In one session we asked about proper interview attire and one student thought it unnecessary to dress professionally for an interview. This really hit home for me.
At that point, I realized how important it was to lay the foundation by teaching basic principles of building and maintaining one’s personal image.
Recently, I read a fantastic article on “Power Dressing” for men. The article not only speaks to last week‘s post about dressing like a leader but it dives deeper into the term “Power Dressing.” The 80’s term refers to an effort by the wearer to convey a sense of dominance, confidence and professionalism through his style of dress and hair.
Let’s talk about that plus how you can create your own “Power Dress” attire!
Are you classic or modern?
A classic style consists of subdued patterns, quality fabric and classic fit. Your colors are typically navy or gray.
The modern style consists of fitted cuts, sleek fabrics and darker or trendier colors like this year’s plaid with subtle lines of purple.
In addition to your style, make sure you always focus on the most important element… fit.
In a recent survey on askmen.com, 72% of men stated style as the most important factor in buying new clothes.
Suit Patterns That Work
Pinstripes are great for someone with a classic style. Pinstripes are typically ¼ of an inch apart. Pinstripes convey an authoritative image.
While the modern dresser will experiment with the latest stripes or colors, they will also opt for a solid color suit and add their own modern twist.
Double-breasted jackets are making a comeback. While the right cut can create a flattering, longer leaner line there are some styles that are more flattering on a taller, trimmer physique. A two-button single-breasted jacket is universally flattering. It helps elongate the torso.
Shirts That Fit
Cotton shirts are the best choice because of the look and added comfort. Polyester tends to cause sweating and odors. It can also feel quite clammy and uncomfortable to some.
This season, French cuff dress shirts have found their way into power dressing. Don’t forget a nice pair of cufflinks. Single–button-cuff shirts are also a good look when paired with your suit or slacks.
– A white shirt is and will always be a classic. With a navy or gray suit, a white shirt is as powerful as it gets because of the amount of contrast it adds. Pale Blue is another great option. Blue, commonly associated with serenity, conveys a powerful message with a dark suit. Blue is a great color for television!
– Pinstripes provide flair to your suit. In “The New Professional Image,” a single narrow stripe is considered strong against a gray, navy, red or burgundy background.
– As for fit, a straight collar is the most versatile and easiest to wear with almost any suit. Shirts should extend at least six inches below the waist so it stays tucked in. Sleeves should be ½” longer than the break of the wrist with a bit peaking through the bottom of the jacket.
Ties the Bind
– A bright tie is the best compliment to your dark suit and white shirt. If pairing with a pinstripe suit, use the accent color as the main color for your tie. Red brick and burgundy are this seasons power options.
– Patterns may like paisley, diagonal stripes, dots or foulards remain good options. Stick to one dominant pattern in the outfit.
– The tie should fall just at your belt clip. There should only be one dimple secured with a pinch. Curled edges will kill the look… keep it clean.
– Clip-ons. Really? In the days of youtube.com are not options.
Shoes – Modern or Classic
The classic dresser may find the loafer or oxford compliments his style.
A modern style type would gravitate towards wing tips. They produce an added flair to the straight leg flat front style of the modern man.
Other Items
When considering accessories, don’t forget about the essential aspect of maintaining your timepieces with a reliable watch service, ensuring your watches are in top condition is equally important. Alongside cuff links, dress socks, a 1″ inch wide leather belt, a quality briefcase and/or portfolio, and a premium leather wallet.
