Social Profile Content Tips

The best way to make sure that negative content and links are pushed down on search engines is to post consistent positive information in association with your name.

Here are some general social profile content recommendations and best practices:

We recommend that you set up and use online Profiles (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Quora) to post content because they naturally rank higher than 3rd Party links. And make sure that your Profiles are set to public, because search engines cannot index restricted information. (View a full list of online profiles on your Submit Links page–you have to login to BrandYourself first)

1. Update Content on a regular basis

The more often you update Profile content, the more relevant it becomes to search engines — and the more likely it is to rise over time.

How to keep Content updated:

  • If it’s a social network, post a status update once a week

  • If it’s a blog, publish a post once a week

  • If it’s an article about you, comment on it and ask friends to do the same

2. Link to it from as many places as possible

Search engines consider every link pointing to positive Content as a “vote” for it to rank higher for your name — especially if the link text includes “YOUR FULL NAME.”

Places where you can link to this result:

  • Your social networking profiles (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest)

  • Your blogs or websites if you have any (e.g. WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger)

  • In a blog comment you leave on someone else’s blog

  • Any other places that allow you to publish a link

Important:

If possible, make the link to this result include text with “YOUR FULL NAME” so that search engines know it should rank high for your name.

  • Good: “Check out this article about YOUR FULL NAME.”

  • Bad: “Check out this article about me.”

Note: Not all places allow you to edit your link text. If that’s the case, a link without your name still helps.

3. Recommendations for image results

In order to get control of your image results, you have to highlight your existing positive images, and you also have to submit new images. Make sure to have any services you submit photos to set to publicly visible, otherwise search engines won’t be able to find them for their search results.

Where to submit images:

Important:

When naming your images, include “YOUR FULL NAME” in the title, as well as in any other areas such as photographer, location, and descriptions.

  • Title: “YOUR FULL NAME, summer vacation”

  • Photographer/Credit: “YOUR FULL NAME photographed by PHOTOGRAPHER” or “Photo by YOUR FULL NAME”

  • Caption/Description: “YOUR FULL NAME at the beach in Mexico during summer vacation. Photo by YOUR FULL NAME.”

Basically, you want your name associated with the image as much as possible. An image that doesn’t have your name attached has no way of showing up in search results for you.

Note: Not all places allow you to edit edit all of these sections. If that’s the case, uploading an image without your name still helps if it’s attached to a profile with your name.

Final Note: Keep in mind that your changes will take time to be evaluated and indexed by search engines. It’s common for it to take anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks for changes and edits to online content to be indexed and start showing on search results pages. Keep moving forward posting positive content associated with your name – that’s the best way to build your Personal Brand!
